Stop At: Colombo, Colombo, Western Province

Just east of Fort train station, Manning Market is ripe with everything grown in Sri Lanka. It’s the city’s wholesale fruit and veg centre and is a monkey’s dream of bananas.

One of the things I enjoy the most about visiting markets such as this is that you get an intriguing glimpse into local life and as I was expecting, the market in Colombo did not disappoint. In many ways it’s an assault on the senses; a cacophony of noise with people bartering down prices and market trades people doing their best to attract you to their stall over their rivals.

Fort Colombo is the heart and soul of Colombo. The city’s centuries-old powerhouse with a long and proud tradition of trade. This is where history was made in the past and where it’s made once again. The historic centre around the presidential palace that was off-limits for a long time, is now undergoing a facelift, bringing back Fort’s vivacity and old grandeur. Run-down colonial buildings get a fresh coat of paint and new café’s and shops open along the cobblestoned streets. We meet two entrepreneurs that are part of this make-over: Rukshan from The Re.Pub.Lk and Brindha from Hatch. Fort is their location of choice, from where they’re driving the revival of Colombo’s #01 historic hotspot.

Asia, most specifically Southeast Asia, has always been quite famous for its spicy foods. The region’s cooks have dabbled with the science of spices for millenia and are very experienced and used to cooking using spices. The fact that most spices are grown around the tropical regions of Southeast Asia played a large part in this. Sri Lanka, the pearl of the Indian Ocean, has been the centre of the spice trade throughout history.

Stop At: Ceylon Tea Supermarket, 326/A,Deans Road, Colombo 01000 Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is all about tea. The country’s century-long love affair is only growing stronger and this place has a tea-drinking culture like no other. No, what about a good cuppa- For years, good coffee was hard to find in Colombo, but things are changing fast. Jumping on the emerging global artisanal coffee culture, swanky coffee shops are popping up all over town, making a mean cuppa. But hands down, the absolute best cup of coffee in Colombo is in the market streets of Pettah, the bustling heart of the city. Here, hidden in the chaotic market bazaar among shops selling teas, rice, and spice, is Ijaz Ahamed’s Beans Factory. This small hole-in-the-wall shop is nothing fancy, but Ijaz and his team take their coffee seriously. From Pettah, he sells his roasted beans all over the country and is happy to brew you a perfect espresso. We go to Old Moor Street to find out more about The Beans Coffee Factory.

Construction of the Jami-Ul-Alfar Mosque commenced in 1908 and the building was completed in 1909. The mosque was commissioned by the local Indian Muslim community, based in Pettah, to fulfill their required five-times-daily prayer and Jummah on Fridays. The mosque's designer and builder was Habibu Labbe Saibu Labbe (an unqualified architect), and was based on details/images of Indo-Saracenic structures provided by South Indian traders, who commissioned him. It is a hybrid style of architecture, that draws elements from native Indo-Islamic and Indian architecture, and combines it with the Gothic revival and Neo-classical styles. Originally it had the capacity for 1,500 worshippers although at the time only around 500 were attending prayers.
