Itinerary
This is a typical itinerary for this product

Stop At: Haarlem Railway Station, Stationsplein 11 L, 2011 LR Haarlem The Netherlands

We will start with a short historical background of the city development. Haarlem train station is our first site. We will admire its architecture, learn about railways in the Netherlands and expansion of the city to the North.

Duration: 10 minutes

Stop At: Kenau and Ripperda Monument, Stationsplein, Haarlem The Netherlands

We will proceed to learn about the siege of Haarlem by the Spanish troops in the 16c. during the Eighty Years War and pay tribute to the city heroes who helped defend it.

Stop At: Hofje Van Staats, Jansweg 39, 2011 KM Haarlem The Netherlands

I will guide you through a secret door to find one of the largest courtyard almshouses (hofjes) in Haarlem. This is a typically Dutch phenomenon and an early form of social housing. You will learn about the rich history of such hofjes in the city and the story behind the Hofje van Staats.

We will look at both the front and the back facades and learn how this courtyard is conencted to the previous one we visited

Stop At: Molen De Adriaan Museum, Papentorenvest 1a, 2011 AV, Haarlem The Netherlands

Our next stop is the picturesque windmill De Adriaan. We will admire it from across the river Spaarne and go back over 200 years to compare a painting by a local artist to what we are seeing today. You will hear a captivating story of the mill building, use, destruction and re-building. It’s a perfect spot for picture-taking as well.

We’ll continue along the river to learn about the transformation plans of the famous prison closed a few years ago.

Stop At: Teylers Hofje, Koudenhorn 64, 2011 JE Haarlem The Netherlands

We’ll stop to admire the neo-classical façade and hear the story of another grand hofje.

Stop At: Teylers Museum, Spaarne 16, 2011 CH Haarlem The Netherlands

This is the oldest museum in the Netherlands, based on the original private collection. You will learn about the fascinating founder of the museum and what treasures and masterpieces you can find there. Admission to the museum is not included. I recommend it for visiting on your own.

Stop At: Waag, 2011 DA Haarlem, Netherlands

The stunning architecture and use of the building will be the subject of my next story. We will look at the painting by a Dutch master of the 17 c. and compare it to the building in front of us.

Stop At: Hofje van Bakenes, Bakenessergracht and the Wijde Appelaarsteeg, Haarlem The Netherlands

This is the oldest hofje in the Netherlands that we will visit and learn about.

Stop At: St. Barbara Gasthuis, Jansstraat 54, 2011 RZ Haarlem The Netherlands

Having walked through the Red Light district in Haarlem, we’ll find our way to the old gate of the St. Barbara Gasthuis to learn about the early history of the city hospitals.

Stop At: Sint-Bavokerk (Church of St. Bavo), Grote Markt 22, 2011 RD Haarlem The Netherlands

150 years of the Church building, the story of the saint and the legend of the Haarlem shield are to be told here. Visit to the church is not part of the tour.

Stop At: Hoofdwacht, 2011 NZ Haarlem, Netherlands

I will show the oldest bricks in the city and tell you about the history of the building through ages.

Stop At: Vleeshal, grote Markt 18, 2011 RD Haarlem The Netherlands

Our next stop at the same square, a perfect example of Dutch renaissance – the Meat Market

This is the oldest city hall in the Netherlands, still in use as such. We will once again refer to the painting by a Dutch master of the 17c to see how the building has evolved through history.
