Adelie penguin
:
NAME (S) LOCAL (S):
Adelie penguin
DISTRIBUTION IN CHILE:
Antarctic circumpolar
IDENTIFYING FEATURE OF THE HEAD AND NECK:
Head and neck black later. Anterior neck white. White circle around the eye. Short black beak. Length: 70 cms.
The penguins were given this name because of an appearance very similar to Great FTAA, a bird that at first was called penguin, now extinct (the last couple died in Iceland in 1844), and who lived in the North Atlantic islands. Although very different families, that seemed made to occur and confusion in the ancient mariners, who called our current penguins in the same way they are known in the northern hemisphere to the Great FTAA: Bird Penguin or Bobo.
