My friends and I were picked up on time in Plaza Colon by our wonderful tour guide, Fernando. On the drive out to El Yunque, Fernando made a stop for breakfast where we had the most delicious pasteles and coffee. Once back on the road, Fernando gave us information about what to expect from our day and was able to answer all questions. He provided water, gatorade, and carried a waterproof back pack to hold our belongings if need be. Once on our hike, Fernando gave us clear instructions of how to avoid getting stuck in the mud and led by example. Throughout the hike he taught us about the wildlife we were seeing/hearing as well as facts about the flora and fauna native to PR. We were able to get great photos before other groups arrived near a waterfall, and spent time at the natural slides before any group. This travel company provides snacks during the hike (fresh avocado, mango, pineapple that you eat right off a giant leaf!!). We all left this experience feeling exhilarated, educated on PR wildlife, and so happy to have spent a beautiful day hiking together with Fernando's guidance. After leaving El Yunque, we stopped at a nearby beach where there were too man food options to choose from! We were given an hour to eat and hang before heading back to Old San Juan.

Overall, if you book this tour, you will not be disappointed. However, with Fernando, your day will be truly exceptional!

Thanks Fernando! (Marian, Maya, Natalie, Gabi, and Victoria)

We did this tour the day before we departed for a cruise. It was my husband and I, and our 23, 20, 17 and 10 year old children. My kids LOVED it! All ages could physically do it and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. I will warn you that it is physically strenuous and if you aren’t agile and in decent shape you will possibly not be able to do the tour. There is no way my mother in law could have done it at all. There was a LOT of walking through bumpy trail in thick, slick mud and a LOT of rock climbing. I am 50 and had a challenging time maneuvering but was able to do it and thoroughly enjoyed seeing my kids have so much fun. Andre was more than fantastic! We could not have had a more positive and gentle soul guide us through the physical challenges. The weather was perfect and we had a ball. Thank you Andre!

Andre and Michel were fantastic guides into El Yunque. The trek was a thrilling, fun trip that was free from huge crowds of tourists and saw the coolest parts of the jungle. We loved scrambling up the huge boulders and almost sheer rock faces, and jumping off cliffs into the roaring river was a once in lifetime experience! Bring good hiking shoes that you don't mind getting wet--what's most important is that you have good footing underneath you!

El Yunque is gorgeous, I recommend this excursion for anyone wanting to have a once in a lifetime adventure. Scenery is beyond words. Tour guide Hector is extremely knowledgable about the rainforest and everything and anything else to do in PR. Great snacks during the tour, absolutely delicious fruit.

This is o e of the most exciting and exhilarating action tours you can take. Hike through the rainforest up to waterfalls and rock formations that you can slide on, jump from and swim in.

This tour was amazing. The hike was about 45min to an hour and definitely recommend it for people who are physically fit. It can be a little challenging if you dont have any experience hiking. Do wear true shoes! Water shoes are no good for this trip as they have no grip, Keens would be okay as long as they are closed toe. The tour portion of it was great, so much knowledge and information given to us. The water portion of the trip was great. I got to jump off a couple of cliffs, go down a water slide and get a little dirty in the mud. It was a great choice! Out of the hotel by 830 and back by 530. Great stop in the a.m for a smoothie and some fruit, and in the pm ended the day with a mojito and some wonderful seafood lunch. Loved every second of it, again if you're in good health condition, go for it! Cedric, Tyson and Andre, thanks so much!!!!

My guide (Jacob) was great and it was a nice day trip. Please note: you won't spend more than 40 minutes hiking. This is NOT a heavy hiking gig. You'll hike a little bit (yes, it's muddy, there'll be tons of rocks, and it's somewhat difficult; hiking boots are essential), but you'll spend most of your time relaxing by a waterfall, jumping off cliffs to the water etc. For me, it was more of a "water thing" than a "hiking thing." Still worth it, but I was expecting hours and hours of hiking, which didn't happen.

This tour was unreal. Our guide, Alex, was the perfect mix of adventurous and cautious, accommodating and understanding, and unbelievably knowledgable on all things about the rainforest. He actively participated in all of the activities, so as to encourage others to participate. He very thoroughly investigated safety issues and possible risks throughout the day. He catered to the crowd and adapted the hike to support the wants/needs of all members of the tour. He explained all of the things we were doing and how to properly and safely participate. This was easily the most exciting and invigorating tourist activity I've ever paid for. If I knew it would be this awesome, I would have been willing to pay three times as much. While the hike and the activities were incredible, Alex's enthusiasm, passion, and interest in everyone's enjoyment really made this tour the best.

I will note that the description may need to be a bit more explicit in the level of physical activity/difficulty this tour entails. The hike itself was definitely more rigorous than I was expecting, though very pleased with it. You will be required to get in the water at certain points on the hike, even if not choosing to swim in the pools/waterfalls. I do think the level of adventure and difficulty would likely vary depending on your guide, but it is worth noting that the current description was much tamer than my personal experience which again I totally loved.

Excellent hike for those with some experience and can climb a few flights of stairs and dont mind getting muddy. if I had to do over again I would have booked the trip with people I knew. You never know who shows up. I find peple who are late to booking times, really inconsiderate. its NOT all about you. That said, Alex was extremely considerate, well informed and prvovided fun for all. The swimming was great in the waterfalls. Saw some birds, snails, Coqui!! I would do it again. Boots or shoes with serious tread strongly advised.

Well worth the money. Be aware this is no leisure hike, especially back up hill. On the way down the morning rain made the rocks slippery and dangerous, however our tour guide alex was patient and gave great advice. We stopped at 2 waterfalls and alex said roundtrip is ~3miles.

This tour was amazing! It was probably the coolest part of our trip to Puerto Rico and I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone who is looking for a unique way to explore El Yunque. When they say this tour is for the physically fit, they mean it. It involves a lot of climbing and walking over roots, rocks, and through water. Also if you are afraid of heights you might want to stay behind but if you think you can handle it then you should definitely do it. The restaurant that you eat lunch at is authentic Puerto Rican that you won't find in the tourist areas of San Juan, the food is delicious. Overall this was an amazing tour!!

This was our third trip to El Yunque and it was the best! Our guide, Alex, was fantastic. He is not your average guide since he lives in the forest and studies it!. He also was responsible for opening the great trail and path we took to see the less busy areas of El Yunque. He was knowledgable, fun and patient with the various speeds of hikers. We are already looking forward to returning and going on another adventure with Alex!

Alex the Adventurer! What an amazing guy! Alex is extremely knowledgeable about El Yunque Rainforest and has NO FEAR! I am so happy my family and I was able to experience this.
I was pretty confident about booking this tour until the day before when I started reading a bit more about it and how physical it gets. I contemplated chickening out BUT I have three daughters whom would see me not try so there was no option. I was going to do it no matter what.
We were staying at Rio Grande so we met Alex and the rest of the tour at a local fruit market where I was allowed to park my car there. We got in a van and drove off. Alex gave us great information about the Rainforest. He knows it like the back of his hand. We hiked down. Initially I thought ok, not super strenuous. Its manageable. Then he says we havent even started level orange yet. I got a little nervous as I was already super-focused on my every step. The forest is BEAUTIFUL. So many different types of trees and ferns and bamboo. Just gorgeous. Alex made a very cool hat out of a tree leaf for my daughters.
Then it became a really messy sweaty best-thing-ever kind of a hike! I felt like I was living the life of Indiana Jones climbing rocks while holding on to tree vines, swimming in secluded waterfalls, and even riding the nature-made rock slides. Alex kept us motivated and focused, yet he taught us to seize the moment and enjoy nature at its best! I still cant believe I was able to do it! Alex, you gave my little family and I an experience we will remember for the rest of our lives. You hold a special place in our hearts for that!

Our first time in Puerto Rico, we were told by friends who visited to do the Off the Beaten Path tour with Alex. We were so happy we started our trip with this tour. Alex was fantastic. So knowledgable, adventuresome, and good company for our family, we had an amazing hike in the rainforest. Lucky for us the rains the night before produced a spectacular show in the waterfalls, and made for an adventure when ending the tour on the rock slides. This tour is definitely worthwhile if you like adventure, can handle a strenuous hike, and want to be off the beaten path deep into the rain forest. Be prepared, with a hearty breakfast before leaving, good shoes for hiking, and plenty of water and a protein bar! It's a long day with a delicious local lunch at the end. Alex gets 5's - we all enjoyed getting to know him!

I am writing this review because A this was an AMAZING excursion and we had the best guide we could have ever asked for - it was probably the highlight of our entire trip and it was a perfect trip to Puerto Rico and B I'd like to rebuke an unjust review from someone who was on the excursion with us.

I'd like to start with the positive because I seriously can't stop gushing about how much fun this day was for us. There were 6 of us, some of us a little hesitant about being in nature and hiking through the rain forest, but we all agreed at the end that it was the highlight of our entire trip. It wasn't the easiest hike, but I thought the tour description explained it perfectly, and it was exactly what we were looking for. We were able to explore the beautiful El Yunque rainforest, with our very knowledgeable guide, Alex. Beyond the fact that it was absolutely stunning, Alex gave us little tips and tricks throughout the entire hike about all the plant-life and what to do if you got lost in the rainforest, even convincing me that termites don't taste that bad. He was funny, full of information, and well-prepared in case of emergency! Even bringing some Gatorade in case anyone got dehydrated

And then the slide rock... I don't think I have ever laughed so hard in my entire life. It was 4th of July and busy with locals but no one seemed to mind us falling and trying out the slides like fools. I hate tourist traps and this really felt like something local and real - they got it right when they called it off the beaten path. And most importantly, Alex was very patient with everyone, even those of us that kept falling and lagging behind the group, making sure that anyone that wanted to participate was able to participate.

He took pictures and videos the whole time, so we were able to document what a fun time we had! Thanks, Alex!!

Lastly, I'd like to comment on what I think is a very unjust review from dmerkau. For full disclosure, I am part of the bachelorette party she mentioned and thus may be biased, but to us, her attitude seemed sour from the beginning. As soon as she saw she was with a bunch of young girls, it seemed like her mind was made up that she no longer wanted to be a part of the group. As she mentioned, she left the group about 1/2 down the trail - at which time Alex made plenty of effort to help her, even calling another guide to have her join them from their trip back to the car, before she and her husband decided we should continue on without her. Her husband stayed with the group and he seemed like he had a great time there are pictures on the Facebook page to prove it - so maybe that was the issue after all? He even joined us at the slide rock. It really seemed like he'd become part of our group, and we all made effort to make him feel welcome honestly feeling bad that his wife had abandoned him and was being so pout-y. As for the other two people on the tour, at the end they made mention to me that it was a much better excursion than the one they'd been on the day before and that they'd had a great time, so the assumptions in the review would be incorrect. In regards to stopping for pineapple, it was only because the original lunch spot he wanted to go to was overcrowded due to the holiday, and while searching for a new place, a friend of mine mentioned she'd had a hard time finding pineapple to buy a favorite of hers - Ironically we had just passed a food stand that he knew sold fruit and lunch so we went there. It was a local, family-owned spot that the tour guides love. And let me tell you, it was delicious. Alex even helped everyone in the group the others before our bachelorette group order so we got the best items. He then only sat with us because after we saw him sitting alone, we insisted he join our table - great guides shouldn't sit alone!

I write all this because I was very sad when I read dmerkau's review. It very poorly represented what was one of the most fun days of my life no exaggeration. To anyone reading this, please take her comments with a grain of salt, and know that if you take this excursion, you won't regret it. It will be one of the best excursions you ever take. And I hope you have as much fun as we did! Thanks again, Alex!!

My kids and I enjoyed this tour. No exaggeration from other reviewers, the hike is physically challenging and not recommended for people who don't exercise somewhat regularly. Our recent hike was very muddy as there was a great deal of rain, but we loved it. Hiking boots would be best for this tour, as well as long pants this is what the tour guide wore. Tour was interesting, physically challenging in a good way! and beautiful.
