The Lecce tour includes the Roman amphitheater from the 2nd century BC. near Piazza Sant’Oronzo, once able to hold more than 25,000 people, it is now half-buried by the monuments that have been built on it over the centuries.
Go to the column that supports the statue of the patron saint of Lecce, Sant’Oronzo, donated by the city of Brindisi due to the role that Sant’Oronzo is supposed to have played in curing the city from the plague. Once part of a couple, it marked the end of the legendary Via Appia, the road that connected Rome to southern Italy
