Stop At: Barrys Bay Traditional Cheese, 5807 Christchurch Akaroa Road, Duvauchelle 7582, New Zealand

At Barrys Bay Cheese, the milk comes from local, grass-fed cows. They don’t know their names, but they know where they live. Sourcing there most important ingredient from a single farm in the same geographic area is one of the ways they ensure that every piece of our cheese tastes as good as the last. Being so close to the source of our most important ingredient also has implications for our cheese. Not many people know this, but milk doesn’t like being jiggled about inside a milk tanker. So the less time it spends on the road, the better. By minimising the travel time from the farm to the factory, they do our best to preserve the unique flavour profile of the local milk that gives Barrys Bay cheese its distinctive taste.

Stopping here is optional. Your guide will check in with you to see if you'd like to stop, sample and buy true LOCAL cheese.

Very English, very grand in design and scholastic achievement

"At Christ’s College, we get boys. It’s what makes us one of New Zealand’s leading independent schools for boys from Years 9 to 13.

We understand what makes them tick. We enjoy their energy, their humour, their ideas and their zest for life.

We celebrate boys and we teach in ways they learn best. Our commitment is to work with each boy, to inspire and encourage him to always aspire to reach his full potential."

When the school opened at the start of 1851 in the Lyttelton Immigration Barracks, conditions for both staff and boys were exceedingly primitive. As families moved to the Canterbury Plains, so, in 1852, College followed to St Michael’s Parsonage in Oxford Terrace. Henry Jacobs, the first headmaster, relocated a school which could cater to both boarders and dayboys. Robert Simeon Jackson and Benjamin Thornton Dudley were the first boarders, when the roll numbered 16.
