Classic Inca Trail Hike to Machu Picchu 4 Days

Itinerary

Day 1: CUSCO-OLLANTAYTAMBO-KM 82 PISCAKUCHO-LLAQTAPATA-HUAYLLABAMBA

Stop At: Inca Trail, Cusco 08000 Peru
We’ll pick you up from your hotel between 4:30-5:00 a.m, then we will travel to Ollantaytambo, where you can take the breakfast. After a delicious breakfast , we continue by the Van until KM 82, where the inca trail starts at 9:00 . The first 2 hours of the trek are relatively easy as we make our way to our first Inca site, Patallacta which is an ancient Inca checkpoint for the inca trail travelers to Machu Picchu. After to enjoy this beutiful site we continue 45 min more to get, our lunch spot in Tarachayoq village, then we have to walk through 2 hours more by small communities, reaching the Huayllabamba camping site at 4:00 pm, then you will explore by yourself this beautiful place, at 6:00 pm we will have our dinner.

You will appreciate the best Inca constructions on the Kusichaka river, houses and Inca temples.
Duration: 45 minutes

Stop At: Inca Trail, 08680, Peru
It is a tambo or place where the Incas supply their food, it is still possible to see the Inca houses and their barns.
Duration: 20 minutes

Stop At: Wayllabamba Camp, PHP3+75W, Chillca 08680, Peru
It is the first camp where you will arrive on the first day, and if you wish you can walk around to learn more about this village of local farmers and ranchers who have lived since the Inca era.
Duration: 30 minutes

Day 2: MOUNTAIN FOREST OF AYAPATA-HIKE TO DEAD WOMAN PASS-PACAYMAYU BASE CAMP

Stop At: Inca Trail, Cusco 08000 Peru
Your porters will wake up you, at 5:00 am. Today is our hardest day and we will start early. We’ll hike for roughly 4 hours to the highest pass of the trek, Dead Woman’s Pass (4215 meters/13829 feet). The first 2 hours , you will walk into highland forest, the way is steps and uphill. Then you will get the place of Llullucha, where we will stop for 20 minutes, from this point until the dead woman pass is one hour and a half , the landescape gonna change , is a new mcroclimate, becuase the altitude it gonna be very hard, but not impossible to reach the pass, we’ll stop a short break to enjoy the views before setting off again to descend to the next valley (Pacaymayu Valley – Hidden River). It’s another hour and a half down the side of the valley to our lunch spot, usually arriving time is at 2:00 pm , this day you will sleep there. In the afternoon is a free time, to relaxing , in case you like to have a shower there are only cold showers , if not just enjoy the beauty of the landescape, this day we have also tea time and the dinner.

It is the first place where we will make a short stop to appreciate the beautiful landscape of high Andean forests, and an incredible sunrise in the mountains where the Inca trail passes.
Duration: 20 minutes

Stop At: Rio Wayruru, 08680, Peru
This river is passing very close to the Inca road to Machu Picchu, in one part there is an ancient Inca bridge made of sticks, which is renewed every year by the inhabitants of Aayapata.
Duration: 20 minutes

Stop At: Rio Llullucha, 08680, Peru
The Lullucha river is the tributary that is descending from the Warmiwañuska mountain, this river in several sections of the Inca trail intersects the royal Inca road that goes into the forests of Queña, Sauco, Unca and Ñuqchu flowers. You will have small waterfalls of fresh and crystal clear water.
Duration: 2 hours

Stop At: Llulluchapampa, 08680, Peru
Llulluchapampa is the second place where we are going to stop, in order to appreciate the snowy Wayanay and Wayruruk'asa, the weather will be a bit cold, but with a spectacular blue sky.
Duration: 20 minutes

Stop At: Dead Woman's Pass, Inca Trail, 08680, Peru
It is the highest point of the whole tour to Machu Picchu, from this place there are spectacular views of the valleys of Wayllabamba, and Pacaymayu. Surrounded by snowy peaks.
Duration: 20 minutes

Stop At: Pacaymayo Valley Campsite, Inca Trail, 08680, Peru
This place is where we will spend the night in the trekking tents, it has beautiful sunsets, and in the background the snowy Veronica.
Duration: 20 hours

Day 3: RUNKURAKAY RUINS-SAYACMARKA TEMPLE-PHUYUPATAMARKA RUINS-WIÑAYHUAYNA CAMPING SITE

Stop At: Inca Trail, Cusco 08000 Peru
We begin early again, wake up at 5:30am to begin what is commonly felt to be the most beautiful day of the whole Inca Trail. We begin ascending again to the second pass of the trek. It’s 2 hours to the pass and along the way we’ll stop at a small Inca site (Runcu Rakay) and see two huge waterfalls cascading down the opposite side of the valley. After the second pass, it’s another hour downhill hike to reach the magnificent Inca site, Sayacmarca (an otherwise inaccessible village).
We’ll stop here for a rest and have a quick tour of the site and then watch the Vilcabamba mountain range. It’s then just another 20 minutes until we stop for the lunch place, in Chaquicocha at 11:00 am (Dry Lake, 3600 meters). After lunch, we hike for 2 hours along what we like to call “Inca flat” (gradual inclines) and begin to enter the jungle, known as the Cloud Forest. As we walk we will have the opportunity to see the majesty of Salkantay, the second highest snow-capped mountain in Cusco. Towards the end of the Inca flats we begin to make our way up to the last peak at Phuyupatamarka (3600 meters) from where we’ll have great views overlooking the Urubamba River. Down the valley we get our first views of Machu Picchu Mountain but the site itself is still hidden from view. From Phuyupatamarka it´s a 3 hour walk down a flight of steps, to our last campsite, arrival time is at 16:00 pm. Wiñay Wayna is the most spectacular Inca site on the trail after Machu Picchu and the most popular campsite because of its proximity to Machu Picchu.

Stop At: QFCX+M9V, Inca Trail, Runkurakay 08680, Peru
The third day of the walk is another epic day since from here the sunrise is observed, and the ruins of Rubkurakay, whose oval construction gives it a mystical and very ceremonial appearance, used by the Incas.
Duration: 20 minutes

Stop At: Sayacmarca, QFCM+P6W, Aguas Calientes 08680, Peru
They are Inca ruins built on a rocky granite promontory, the main function was the control of visitors by the Inca trail. That is why there observed different rooms, houses, temples and water channels, for the Inca nobility. It also has spectacular views of the Aobamba valley.
Duration: 40 minutes

Stop At: Puyupatamarca, QFV9+95R, Aguas Calientes 08680, Peru
This site is a temple of worship of water and mother earth, it is a stepped structure of terraces and small rooms where pilgrims to Machu Picchu performed cleaning ceremonies with herbs and meditation.
Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: The Ruins of Intipata, Machu Picchu Peru
The archaeological complex of Intipata is a very beautiful place, since it will be delighted by its scenic beauty with the mountains and in the background the valley of the Vilcanota river, at this point the weather is a bit warmer.
Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Winay Wayna, Machu Picchu Peru
The archaeological site of Wiñay Wayna is perhaps one of the most beautiful places designed by Inca architects. It was a royal residence of the families of the most powerful governor of the Inca Empire, the Inca Pachaquteq. This complex has a water channel and ceramic fountains, houses, barns and the great temple of the sun. All built in granite.
Duration: 30 minutes

Day 4: HIKE TO THE SUN GATE-TOUR IN MACHU PICCHU-RETURN TO CUSCO

Stop At: Inca Trail, Machu Picchu Peru
Wake up time is at 4:00 AM. We’ll have a short breakfast at 4:30 AM and wait at the checkpoint to be one of the first team to start trekking when the park rangers will open the last check point at 5:30 AM.The we have to walk for 1 hour 20 minutes to reach the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) at 6:45 am. From here we have spectacular views of the mountains and Machu Picchu in all its glory. As we approach to Machu Picchu the views of the city just get better and better. At about 7:40AM we’ll reach the sacred citadel of Machu Picchu. Before all the travel group have to go outside in order to use the toilets and leave all the big backpacks. We will start the tour into the complex at 8:15 am, it takes 2 hours to visita ll the most important places, then you will go outsise and take one local bus to Aguas Calientes. At midday you can take in the best restaurant you will like in Aguas calientes, this last lunch is not included. At 14:30 pm i sour train return to the Ollantaytambo train station, this trip takes 1h45, then you will be pick up by one of our drivers and came back to cusco. The final place will be your hotel, ariving aprox. at 19:00pm.

It is the gateway to the most sacred citadel of the Incas, Machu Picchu, also the place from where you can appreciate the sunrise in certain months of the year.
Duration: 20 minutes

Stop At: House of the Guardian to the Funerary Rock at Machu Picchu, Cam. Inca, 08680, Peru
When you descend to the first terraces of Machu Picchu, you will arrive at this point where the most famous photo of Machu Picchu was taken.
Duration: 20 minutes

Stop At: Temple of the Three Windows, Cam. Inca, 08680, Peru
It is the most sacred place in Machu Picchu, and the one with the finest granite walls, highlights its internal windows in a trapezoidal shape.
Duration: 10 minutes

It is another very important temple for the religion of the Incas, since this is perfectly aligned to the east where in the month of June during the winter solstice, the first rays of the morning will cast a shadow over the middle monolith, forming the Quechua sacred cross, the famous chakana.

Stop At: Roca Sagrada, Machu Picchu Peru
It is a monolith that represents the sacred mountain of Yanantin. In this temple the Incas made offerings to propitiate the good harvests, and also fertility rituals.

Stop At: Group of the Three Doorways, RFP3+WX4, Aguas Calientes 08680, Peru
This is the urban sector of the rallying and high-ranking families of the Incas, there you will be able to appreciate the real residences with courtyards, kitchens, and artisanal production areas.
Duration: 20 minutes
