Sail Daily from Walvis Bay in search of the South Atlantic Marine Big 5

Many visitors to Namibia travel to see exquisite landscapes and majestic wildlife. Yet, few consider Namibia’s maritime wildlife as part of their safaris. We change all that. On our Marine Big 5 cruises, guests get front row seats to watch seals being boisterous, the eccentric-looking great white pelican and at least one of the more common members of the Marine Big 5 as we are often accosted by Bottlenose, Heaviside and Dusky dolphins who look to satisfy their curiosity. The unconventional mola or sunfish is a highlight for many of our guests and we have had regular sightings of equally impressive Leatherback Turtles. Since all four our catamarans are sailing catamarans, we enjoy letting guests enjoy the true experience of sailing. We frequently switch off the engines and hoist the sails – conditions permitting – and encourage guest to partake in the sailing experience by helping to rig the lines and setting the sails.

From meeting with pelicans to viewing playful seals, and if luck permits, leaping dolphins and shy turtles - all this and more on our daily morning educational dolphin and seal cruises. We set (check-in 08h30) every morning from our Jetty at the Walvis Bay Waterfront for a sailing excursion in search of the Marine Big 5: Whales, Dolphins, Mola, Leatherback turtle and Seals. While serving hot coffee and tea, our initial route takes us past oyster farms as we approach Pelican Point with its landmark lighthouse and 60,000 resident Cape Fur Seals.
In season (July to November), Southern Right Whales and Humpback Whales are often spotted. Bottlenose, Heaviside and Dusky dolphins are regularly seen, as are Sunfish and Leatherback Turtles. Accompanying our three catamarans throughout are Kelp Gulls, Hartlaub’s Gulls, Pelicans and Cape Cormorant.
We hoist the sails of our four sailing catamarans whenever possible, switch off the engines and let our guests experience true sailing. Our journey from Pelican Point takes us past some of the more interesting ships in the bay as we serve fresh oysters with sparkling wine, savory snacks and desserts. We return to the Waterfront at 12h30.
