3-Hour Old Chinatown Food Tour in Toronto
  • 3-Hour Old Chinatown Food Tour in Toronto

Taste your way through one of the largest Chinatowns in the Western Hemisphere! Sometimes referred to as the original Chinatown, it is one of seven in the Greater Toronto Area. This neighborhood is a beehive of activity with shops, cheap housewares, fruit and vegetable stalls, traditional Chinese herbal medicine dispensaries and of course, tons of great food. It can be a pretty intimidating place for those who are unfamiliar with the food and customs of the Asian culture. Let your knowledgeable guide lead the way through a tutored tasting where you will learn the history and culture of the community. Hear about one woman's fight to keep the community from being demolished as well as tidbits of etiquette and ancient customs. So “chī hǎo hē hǎo” 吃好喝好 which literally translates as “eat well and drink".

This is a typical itinerary for this product

Stop At: Chinatown, Spadina and Dundas (From Queen to College and east and west of Spadina), Toronto, Ontario M5T 2E9 Canada

Your uniformed guide will meet you at the south-west corner of College Street and Spadina Avenue where you will set out on a walking tour that will showcase six different authentic Asian eateries. After a brief history lesson of Toronto, set off for your first tasting at a traditional Chinese bakery for an authentic delicacy that celebrates the Cantonese Festival of Spring. From here, you'll duck into a hole-in-the-wall joint that makes the best char sui boa in Toronto.

Next up, you'll visit one of Chinatown’s oldest and most authentic restaurants to taste a dish from the Fukin province of China, that Chef Scott likes to nickname “Chinese Risotto”, along with the best dry-fried squid in the city. A few steps down the street, you'll get to taste and watch as a favorite street vendor demonstrates his family’s version of a Chinese crepe.

Then it’s off for a Hong Kong dim sum experience where you will sit and taste four original dishes while learning the history of dim sum and its traditions. Walk off the feast by browsing an Asian food market before making a pit-stop for “window food”. Last but not least, to bring out your inner chef, you'll end the tour at Chef Scott’s favorite kitchen store which is a venerable “candy land” for some of Toronto’s top chefs.

The tour includes all of preselected food and beverages (ten authentic Asian dishes) and restaurant gratuities. Tour guide gratuities are graciously accepted at your discretion.

Gerry was an excellent food tour guide! We were able to have generous portions of a wide variety of Chinese foods from six different restaurants. Gerry also took the time to show us some beautiful areas near the AGO and provided very interesting history about Chinatown and Chinese food. A great tour. Ask for Gerry!

We loved the cultural history, the tours of the local businesses, and of course the food selections. We are familiar with the cuisine and yet we were surprised and delighted by some of the food choices we ate. Thanks for the great tour.

Let me begin by telling you if you are looking for sample portions, this is not that tour. My wife and I recently took this tour with Chef Scott and a new employee sorry cannot recall her name. To begin with both of these individuals know Toronto, where to eat anything and more importantly how to get there. As to the tour you cannot go wrong. We walked within Chinatown and visited several great places including a bakery, several restaurant, a local market.
With the inside knowledge of locals who know the neighborhood the owners and Chef's we had so much food we brought home leftovers. We had Din Sum, Dumplings and dishes that we the tour participants help to select so they could eat food we they are more comfortable with, but also allowing the more adventurous in the group to order something they wanted to try.
Let me not forget the knowledge they shared about the area and how Chinatown became Chinatown. My wife and I have done food tours around the world and this is one if your a foodie you cannot miss or even if you are just interested in learning more about Toronto while eating good food, this is your tour..

Many food courses, so much good food! Couldn't even eat it all - took lots home in doggie bags. Not too much walking. Felt very comfortable with our tour guide. Although, would like more historical facts about the cuisine. Highly recommended.

The food was different and interesting. One place had huge portions. Disappointed in our tour guide. She kept leaving us to make phone calls and smoke.
