Panama Canal Full Transit Tour
  • Panama Canal Full Transit Tour

Experience a Panama Canal Full Transit Tour navigating from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean in one day. Enjoy the comfort of being in a small vessel and get really close to the Panama Canal's operation.

This is a typical itinerary for this product

Stop At: Panama Marine Adventures, Panama City Panama

Our check in point is at Flamenco Marina, located on the last island of the Amador Causeway. It is right next to the Panama sign and behind the Duty Free Shop.

    Duration: 30 minutes

Pass By: Bridge of the Americas, Balboa, Panama City Panama

The Bridge of the Americas is a road bridge in Panama, which spans the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal. Designed by Sverdrup & Parcel, it was completed in 1962 at a cost of US$20 million, connecting the north and south American land masses.

Pass By: Panama Canal, Gatun Lakee, Panama City Panama

The vessel will then transit through the first set of locks, the Miraflores Locks, where it will ascend 18 meters in two distinct steps. Next, the Pacific Queen will enter Miraflores Lake, which is a small artificial body of fresh water that separates Pedro Miguel Locks from Miraflores Locks. The vessel will transit through Pedro Miguel Locks, which is one of the two sets of locks on the Pacific side, and here the vessel ascends 9 meters in one-step.

After exiting Pedro Miguel locks, the Pacific Queen will travel through the Gaillard Cut, where the Chagres River flows into the canal. The Gaillard Cut (also known as Culebra Cut because its curves resemble a snake) is one of the main points of interest for visitors because it was carved through the Continental Divide and this section of the Canal is full of history and geological value. As you transit the Cut you will be able to appreciate the continuous maintenance that this area requires, because it is very susceptible to landslides.

During your Panama Canal full transit tour you will enjoy a trip through Gatun Lake, which was formed by erecting the Gatun Dam across the Chagres River. As you transit through Gatun Lake you will pass the Smithsonian Research Station at Barro Colorado. You will also experience the Gatun Locks, which are the only set of locks in the Atlantic sector. In Gatun Locks, the vessel will be lowered a total of 26 meters in three distinct chambers. Upon arriving at Colon, you will disembark at Colon 2000, where transportation back to Panama City will be provided.

Pass By: Centennial Bridge, Pan-American Highway, Panama City Panama

Panama's Centennial Bridge is a major bridge crossing the Panama Canal. It was built to supplement the overcrowded Bridge of the Americas and to replace it as the carrier of the Pan-American Highway. Upon its opening in 2004, it became the second permanent crossing of the canal.

Pass By: Chagres River, Gamboa Panama

The Chagres River in central Panama, is the largest river in the Panama Canal’s watershed. In the past, this river was an important means of communication between one coast and the other, as it was part of the famous colonial road “Cruces”, originally built by the Spanish crown during the 16th century and of massive use by adventurers and explorers during the following centuries until the creation of the Panama Canal. During the 20th Century the river was dammed twice, and the resulting reservoirs – Gatun Lake and Lake Alajuela – formed an integral part of the canal and its water system.

Pass By: Barro Colorado Island, Panama

Prior to the construction of the Panama Canal, the vast jungle area that is now the Gatun Lake was teeming with an overwhelming abundance of wildlife. As the region was flooded to create the lake, animals took refuge in the mountain peaks, which are now the many islands that dot the renowned lake. Barro Colorado Island is the biggest island formed where the Smithsonian Research Institute has established the most important research center in Panama due to its biodiversity.

Pass By: Gatun Lake, Panama City Panama

Gatun Lake forms a major part of the Panama Canal and it was created between 1907 and 1913 by the construction of the Gatun Dam across the Chagres River. The lake is situated in the Valley of the Chagres River and the geography was ideal for the creation of a large lake. The damming of the river flooded the originally wooded valley and hills although many hilltops became islands. At the time it was created, Gatun Lake was the largest man-made lake in the world.

Exactly as described on the website. The full tour does make for a long day. Pickup at the hotel was at 5:25am and I didn't return to my hotel until after 7pm. We had all types of weather during the transit, from rain to sunshine, remember you are in the tropics.

Be ready for a very early start. We were picked up at our hotel at 5am! The food is suitable, but not great. If you are particular, bring your own. The staff are very nice and the guide, Gus, was outstanding. The views are incredible and ride back on the e bus gives an added bonus of seeing the countryside!

We were eager to sign on with Viator to engage in a "full transit tour" of the Panama Canal.
It was one of the most spectacular learning and viewing experiences of many years of travel.
Viator made great arrangements picking us up at our hotel and returning us to same on schedule.
The boat included a full meal and other terrific sides of drink, etc. to satisfy.
The best part for us and the others was the constant PA delivery to all decks in great clarity regarding information from the Viator guide who had a plethora of virtually un-ending in-depth knowledge of literally all aspects of the canal from the world history down to exactly how the locks worked and every subject matter in between. In addition, pointing out the types of ships we were seeing was outstanding and of great interest.
The boat was of 2 enclosed decks and an upper open deck. The whole tour was simply one of those rare exceptional experiences that one can have. We recommend to anyone and everyone of any age from any country!

Another box ticked...did 2 crossings as a merchant marine engineer 50 years ago so saw very little being down in the engine room so it was most enjoyable seeing it for real.

Excellent trip through 6 locks and a man made lake. Cant experience the enormity of the Canal and the infrastructure / personal required unless you take this trip. The commentary was superb and the boat was perfect size to move around and take photos.

The trip was amazing! It was well organized! Enjoyed everything! The food was good, but maybe little limited for my vegetarian daughter. Also would have been nice to know that my hotel pick up was not available due to distance. During the registration, it should say how far away the pickups are scheduled. We had to get our own transportation to Marina. Otherwise, it was great!

This tour is the experience of a lifetime and certain to please any curious or seasoned traveler. Staff is stellar; very courteous, organized, and well-prepared! Our tour narrator, Gus, is unparalleled in his knowledge, enthusiasm, energy, and sense of humor. While the full transit makes for a long day, we believe a partial transit would have diminished the awe and magic of the canal's history and grandeur. Worthy of anyone's bucket list, this tour is definitely a magnificent highlight of our vacation.

This was a terrific trip and one we highly recommend. It is unlike any other tour that you have taken to be able to transit the entire length of the Panama Canal, to get to see the whole path of the canal, see how it works, to travel through the locks and to travel with other ships is an experience you'll never forget. It is a long day, but don't be put off by that, it is very interesting, the ship is comfortable and you'll be well taken care of by the crew. All of the crew were very nice, very helpful and informative about the canal. We have two very nice meals breakfast and lunch plus snacks and plenty of beverages. All of which made the trip very easy and comfortable and kept us focused on the highlight of the trip - seeing the canal ! Very much worth the trip!

This was the trip of a lifetime. To see those enormous barges loaded with unfathomable amounts of cargo, from all over the world-incredible. The guide also gives fascinating facts about the canal. It's like an amazing history lesson. Every boat has a pilot provided by the Canal authority my new dream job-driving the boat that brings the pilots to the barges! You are also provided with breakfast, lunch and snacks. Water is always available in abundance. I will admit it was rather long, so you can bring a book or cards while going across lakes. A number of people knew to do that. But it was fine. I found the whole experience thrilling. My 17 year old son and I loved it. One complaint to Viator-all those people using I-Pads as cameras. Of course, all the passengers wanted to congregate at the front of the boat as we entered the locks-and there were those people who insisted on holding I-pads in the air to take pictures and even worse-videos blocking people's views. This should be discouraged or banned. What ever happened to experiencing the moment? Imagine traversing the Panama Canal through your I-Pad! You could have stayed home and done that through You-Tube.

This is a great trip, made better by our knowledgable and entertaining narrator Gus. We traveled from Panama City to Colon in a little over seven hours. If you are an independent traveler it's good to arrive early as people are assigned colored wristbands based on when they check in. This also determines boarding order and the best seats and when various groups are called for breakfast and lunch. Very informative and enjoyable!

We loved this tour! It was everything and more. Our tour guide, Gus, kept everyone well informed in both lively English and Spanish. The size of the ship allowed up close and personal views of the locks, the big ships we traveled with, and the islands in Lake Gatun. They kept us full, too, with a generous breakfast, lunch and a snack. Going through all 6 locks allowed for getting familiar with the whole process. the beautiful ride through Gatun Lake allowed for leisure. Some read books, some played cards, we talked a lot with our fellow travelers. I think it was even better than going through on a cruise ship because we we so close to the water the whole time.

The full day tour is a must, although a long day, to fully appreciate the canal. Gus provided the best commentary throughout the whole trip with a great sense of humour. Thanks to our pilots, a requirement for any shop passing the canal, for jumping the queues and saving us 2 hours of wait time.
