Fei Fei was a great guide who showed us a few different areas of Shanghai not usually visited by tourists. She was passionate and had a lot of enthusiasm. The tour was great and more so because of a great guide.

The tour was absolutely the right choice! Penny is a very knowledgeable and competent guide and a beautiful woman too! 
I really enjoyed the tour, learned a lot about the historical side of Shanghai and for sure saw some exciting corners and places of old Shanghai, which are not accessible for an usual tourist.
Absolutely recommendable and I will for sure book the next tour on my future trip to Shanghai! Thank you.

We had Kelly as our guide. She met us at our hotel at 9am and took us on an amazing journey through Shanghai history. Kelly has such a great knowledge of Chinese history. It is a shame to find out that much of the Old Town is set to be demolished with the residents being moved out. Hopefully there will be a museum established to allow this history to be passed on to visitors of this area.

We recommend if you are visiting Shanghai in the next year make sure you visit here and do the tour because it will be gone forever. So glad we did the tour and thank you Kelly you were amazing.

This was a hidden gem of a tour and our tour guide Penny did a great job explaining about the history of the old section of Shanghai which is soon going through some changes. We also had great famous shanghai noodles at authentic restaurant where the locals eat. I recommend this half day tour to anyone visiting Shanghai

FeiFei was a wonderful guide. We spent a substantial afternoon seeing around old Shanghai. We started at the Water Tower and progressed through some very old heritage buildings, due to be restored over time, then on to to large house which had its yard converted into a metal smelting works during the Cultural Revolution with a large Red Army star in middle of gates. Beside this was house where Einstein and his wife had visited and stayed with a Chinese scholar. Next we
visited a very old stately walled home in the old town. This was truly fascinating and we met the daughter of the original owner - who has extremely lovingly minded the original contents and features of the house. This is an amazing place to visit and Auntie Gou was so welcoming and generous with her time and knowledge.
We walked thorough the old town, viewing lots of friendly local people and small vendors whilst heading to the Confucius temple just as it was closing. FeiFei insisted on bringing us back the following day, at no extra cost, when we had the added advantage of viewing a second hand book sale with so many interesting and important artefacts from Chinese recent history.
FeiFei was an incredible guide who went way over and above her job to give us a wonderful and memorable experience of Shanghai, even taking us into a local restaurant to sample lots of delicious local cuisine.
Thankyou FeiFei we will definitely do this tour again and couldnt recommend it highly enough!!!

My family and I loved this tour!
Our tour guide Fei Fei had a keen in-depth knowledge on the history of this walled-off historical treasure. She had the perfect balance of patience and fluidity in moving us along, all with a perpetual smile and warm heart. This tour navigated a path some places that we would have NEVER seen on our own. The old-style cluster of houses with generational family inhabitants highlighted communal living, exotic to most Americans. Once upon a time they were grand living quarters, but as the revolution took hold, the affluent were targeted and families uprooted. I highly recommend this specific walking tour for its historical perspective. Amongst the towering modern high-rises of Shanghai lay slivers of its ancient past. Ask for Fei Fei to lead your group and you won't be disappointed!

Penny is awesome! She is so knowledgeable when it comes to Chinese history and will take you places you will never find on your own, all the while bringing it to life with her stories. At the end of the tour, she gave us her cell phone and told us to call her if we needed anything at all while in Shanghai. Well I sure did! I found myself quite lost one day while touring on my own so I texted her and she sorted me out straight away. I felt I had a real friend in the city. Take this tour, it will not disappoint!

This was an amazing walking tour. Our tour guide was Penny, who spoke perfect English and seemed to have an endless amount of information to share. You know how sometimes on tours there are awkward periods of silence? Don't expect this from Penny, who seems to know random facts about every street you pass by and ties it into China's colorful history. I also loved how this tour was a bit off the beaten path for tourists - we did plenty of walking tours in Shanghai, but this one felt perhaps the most authentic. Thanks again Penny!

Wow, everyone should take this tour and take it with Penny. It was absolutely amazing. Penny took us places where we did not see any other tourists and I am not sure that many tourists go to the real old city. She had an amazing breadth of historical knowledge but clearly also has gotten to know people in the area. Penny was also just an extremely kind and warm person. My daughter and I got very cold. The day before had been very hot, and it was hot in the morning, but then the temperature dropped and the wind kicked up and we were very cold. Penny took extra time -- her time -- to take us to a shop to buy warmer clothes because she knew we were going on a night walking tour and the night cruise. And she took us to a quite affordable place. It probably added at least an hour to her time. She also then stayed with us until we met our next tour -- all in all, I think Penny spent more than two hours extra with us. We so enjoyed our time with her, seeing things that were stunning in so many ways and learning things it would be hard to have learn anywhere else. We highly recommend this tour.

I would highly recommend this tour. Our guide FeiFei was delightful a and a wonderful hostess. This tour definitely took you off the regular path and to some places that you would NEVER see on your own. From old style houses that will probably not be there much longer as they were surrounded by high rises to smaller museums that were quaint interesting and uncrowded. It was a great job lead by a very knowledgeable tour guide. I really enjoyed all aspects of this tour the places that were selected and the guide. It was outstanding !!

My sister and I really enjoyed Penny's tour of Old Shanghai. She was really prompt, meeting us at our hotel and taking the tour at our pace. Penny is very knowledgeable about Shanghai's history, the area we were visiting and what she didn't know she would find out and send to us in an email. We saw a slice of life that people may not get to see: the private Catalpa Garden was fascinating because you get to meet one of the owners whose father built the residence and garden, and ask questions about their life and home in the days before the Cultural Revolution. You get to see how some people live in Old Shanghai some homes are old and have no baths or kitchens. It's fascinating and a lesson in history! We ended our tour with lunch at Lost Heaven, a Yunnan restaurant with great reviews and Penny helped us by calling the restaurant to find out if it was open for lunch. If you are interested in history, in how people used to live or are living today, I recommend this tour.

This was one of the most fascinating tours I took that really made me feel as though I went beyond the touristy veneer of Shanghai and finally got a glimpse of Shanghai's history and how ordinary people lived. My tour guide Penny is absolutely wonderful and I can't recommend her highly enough. She is a fount of information about all sorts of things: history of the old Chinese town, stories of the major families who lived here during the Ming and Qing dynasties, shikumen architecture, literature, etc. If she doesn't know something, she takes the trouble to find out for you. I really enjoyed her guiding and learned so much about historical Shanghai from her. I was thrilled that she was guiding me on my next tour of the French Concession. I enjoyed the French Concession tour very much, but I think this tour of the old city was my favourite because I would never have found these places by myself, let alone make sense of them and appreciate their intrinsic hidden beauty although masked by much bamboo scaffolding!. I loved finding out so much about the daily lives of Shanghainese people in the past and present. Penny makes it all come alive!

Penny was amazing! She took us through some old neighborhoods that we definitely wouldn't have found on our own. She had tons of information, short stories, or anecdotes to give background and context to each place. She answered any questions we had, gave us time to check out every corner and shop that interested us, and was a complete joy to spend the time with. This tour was very different than expected and surpassed all of our expectations! It was a great intro to Shanghai. 100 recommend.

My adult son and I took this tour. Penny was a very knowledgeable guide and answered all of our questions. We learned things about the old shanghai town, which we had never seen before, while on previous trips to Shanghai.
Just a friendly suggestion though: when picking up customers for this private tour I would suggest that the tour guide announce our name(s) when she enters the lobby of the hotel to pick us up. We waited for 25 minutes in the lobby not realizing that the guide was in the lobby too. Instead she texted me (I only left my home phone number and did not include my cell no.) therefore she was not able to reach me. Announce our names first or show our names on a piece of paper, than have the hotel call up to our room, and lastly if still unable to reach the customer, than contact the customer on the cell phone through text or by calling. Other than that the tour was very informative. Thank you.
