Day In The Life Tour in Samarkand - traditions, food, culture

Join the local family to experience a genuine life in Samarkand. Go to bazar, visit the neighborhood, and prepare the meal together. Learn about the traditions in the house, and enjoy a candid conversation with your host.

Join us in this experience to feel like a local. A local family will pick you up from your hotel, take you to the tour of the bazar, mahalla (their neighborhood) and host you in their house for dinner. Farida - your host - is a teacher at school. Her family is providing this unique chance for you to experience how locals live. Together you would walk the local bazar to do the shopping for fresh produce (see the shopping list below). Then you would take local transport to go to a historic neighborhood - not far away from the paper mill of Samarkand. After some chat with the family, you may prepare the very famous dish of Central Asia - Plov together with the family. Farida would also show you how to prepare a traditional desert - Halvai Tar, the dish that is disappearing after the arrival of manufactured sweets. While preparing the dish to talk to her, and ask questions - she teaches in local school almost every day in the morning. She would take you to the house, help you in understanding how family traditions work, and how people live in this historic city. After the meal, she will take you to the hotel and there you would say your good-byes.

Sample Menu

• Samsa - Multilayered filo with the filling of beef and onions, baked in the oven. We also would have soup with it, made from buckwheat, a 1,000 years old soup
• Plov - The central dish of Uzbekistan - prepared with beef, yellow carrots, rice, and onions.
• Halvai Tar - The ancient dessert made with flour, sugar, and water. It looks very chocolaty from its presentation.
