Itinerary

Day 1: Ypres Battlefields

Stop At: Hill 62 (sanctuary Wood) Canadian Memorial Canadalaan 26, Ieper (Ypres) 8902 Belgium
First stop is an overview of the geography of the area and the battles that take place around Ypres. Using a map and field equipment i will fully explain the who, whys and whats.
Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Sanctuary Wood Museum, Canadalaan 26, Zillebeke, Ieper (Ypres) 8902 Belgium
A visit to the excellent Sanctuary Wood museum to see its unbelievable collection of artifacts and extensive preserved British trench system
Duration: 40 minutes

Stop At: Essex Farm Cemetery, east side of the N369 Ieper - Boezinge Rd, Ieper (Ypres) Belgium
A visit to the preserved dressing station bunkers and the memorial to Lt Col John McCrae and the story of the In Flanders Fields Poem
Duration: 40 minutes

Stop At: Langemark Cemetery, Klerkenstraat, Langemark Belgium
The German cemetery in Langemark, with its mass grave and links to the Nazis makes it a fascinating visit.
Duration: 40 minutes

Stop At: The Brooding Soldier, N313, 8920 Langemark-Poelkapelle, Belgium
The iconic Canadian monument, "The Brooding Soldier" commemorates the Canadian soldiers lost in the gas attacks of 1915. The gardens are also beautiful.
Duration: 20 minutes

Stop At: Tyne Cot Cemetery, Tynecotstraat, Zonnebeke 8980 Belgium
After driving through the battlefields of Passchendaele we finish the morning at the beautiful Tyne Cot cemetery the largest British and Commonwealth war grave cemetery in the world.
Duration: 40 minutes

Stop At: German Command Post, Gaverstraat, Zandvoorde Belgium
After a light lunch we visit the preserved German Command post in Zandvoorde
Duration: 20 minutes

Stop At: Hill 60, Zwarteleenstraat 36-40, Ieper (Ypres) 8902 Belgium
Preserved battlefield, bunkers and mine craters. The story of the terrible fighting at Hill 60
Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Caterpillar mine crater, Zwarteleenstraat 75, 8902 Ieper, Belgium
The story of the battle of Messines Ridge and the war underground at the site of the awe inspiring Caterpillar crater.
Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Christmas Truce Memorial, Chemin du Mont de la Hutte, Comines-Warneton Belgium
After a drive along the Messines Ridge and through the town of Messines we visit one of the sites of the iconic Christmas truce of 1914.
Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: The Ploegsteert Memorial, Rue de Messines Ploegsteert, Comines-Warneton 7782 Belgium
The last stop of the tour is the stunning Ploegsteert Memorial to the missing and the story of William Hackett V.C. an incredible story of self sacrifice.
Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Menin Gate Memorial, Menenstraat Poort gebouw, Ieper (Ypres) 8900 Belgium
This is an optional stop for those who are not staying in Ypres and wish to attend the Last Post ceremony.
Duration: 45 minutes

Meals included:

Day 2: Behind the Lines and the Beautiful Poperinge.

Stop At: Vlamertinge, Vlamertinge, West Flanders Province
First stop of the day is the stunning Agonie memorial which commemorates the horses and pack animals lost in the Great War
Duration: 15 minutes

Stop At: Poperinghe New Military Cemetery, Deken de Bolaan 127, 8970 Poperinge, Belgium
A visit to the graves of some of the men "Shot at Dawn" by the British Army during the First World and the story of the myths that surround the subject.
Duration: 40 minutes

Stop At: Talbot House - Museum, Gasthuisstraat 43, Poperinge 8970 Belgium
We then visit the superb Talbot House Museum and its preserved House and Gardens. Whilst there enjoy a cup of English tea and a slice of cake for only a small donation to the house.
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Stop At: Poperinge Town Hall Death Cell, Grote Markt, Poperinge 8970 Belgium
After a light lunch we then take a short walk to experience the atmosphere in the preserved death cell in Poperinge town hall and its preserved graffiti.
Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Poperinge, Belgium
We then visit the execution site and memorial to the soldiers who were shot at dawn in the area during the Great War
Duration: 20 minutes

Stop At: Poperinge, Poperinge, West Flanders Province
As we walk back the through the town we will stop at the statue of the vivacious "Ginger" and hear the story of Elaine Cossey a favourite of the soldiers during the Great War due to her cheerful disposition
Duration: 10 minutes

Stop At: Poperinge, Poperinge, West Flanders Province
Whilst in the main square we will discuss the darker side of Poperinge during the Great War, its gambling , its bars and of course its many brothels.
Duration: 10 minutes

Stop At: Lijsenthoek, 8970 Poperinge, Belgium
A visit to the second largest British and Commonwealth Cemetery in the Ypres Salient and its excellent visitor centre. Built on the site of a field hospital the cemetery has a high ratio of known to unknown burials. Whilst in the cemetery you will be shown notable graves and different design features
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Stop At: Brandhoek, 8908 Ypres, Belgium
Our last stop of the day is at the grave of Noel Chavasse, the only man to be awarded the Victoria Cross twice in the Great War.
Duration: 30 minutes
