The Ben Youssef Madrasa is a historical Islamic college located in Marrakech, Morocco. It’s named after the adjacent Ben Youssef Mosque and was commissioned by the Saadian sultan Abdallah al-Ghalib in 1564–65 CE. At its peak, it was the largest Islamic college in the Maghreb and is celebrated as a high point of Saadian and Moroccan architecture1.
The madrasa served as a center for learning, where students were educated in Maliki Islamic law, jurisprudence, and various readings of the Qur’an. The Saadian dynasty, known for their lineage as sharifs (descendants of Muhammad), constructed the madrasa following a style established during the earlier Marinid period. It could accommodate over 800 students and functioned until 1960 before being refurbished and reopened to the public as a historical site in 1982. It closed for restoration again in November 2018 and reopened in April 2021.
