3-Hour Hike round trip Monk Trail to Wat Doi Suthep from Chiang Mai

This traditional, three-hour, 12 km round trip Trek to Doi Suthep's leading Temple at 1100 m elevation is a must do while in Chiang Mai.

This trip comes now with an option to cycle back down to the city.

Itinerary

We ascend towards Wat Suthep via the traditional monk Trail, passing by Wat Pa Lat of Doi Pui National Park. The trailhead is situated 400 meters above Chiang Mai Zoo. This route is well-traversed and shaded by towering trees, offering a refreshing respite from the city's warm air as you climb higher up the mountain. The initial 30-minute stretch to Wat Pa Lat is a gentle incline, making it an ideal warm-up trek.
As we continue our ascent, the terrain becomes steeper, with "step-like" paths that require the use of tree roots for stability. This is where our trusty adjustable hiking sticks come in handy. At a relaxed pace, we eventually reach Wat Suthep after a total of two hours of hiking, elevating from 400 meters to 1,100 meters above sea level.
Upon reaching Wat Suthep, you are free to explore the temple and experience early-day temple life. Built in 1383, this famous temple offers incredible views of the valley below. After a light snack brunch at altitude, we begin our descent, slowly climbing down 700 meters to Chiang Mai. Alternatively, if you opt for the cycling option, you can glide down to Chiang Mai in just 20 minutes.
