Our journey takes us through picturesque landscapes and villages to the heart of an area called the Apokoronas. Our 1st stop is the archaeological site of Aptera. After a short drive through magnificent countryside we arrive to a nature lover’s paradise, Almyrida, for swimming & lunch. Our next stop is the village Gavalochori with its Historical Folklore Museum that constitutes characteristic manifestation of the local architecture, and introduces us to the manufacturing traditions of Crete such as silk, pottery, stone sculpturing & woodcarving. A drive through the narrow streets of village Vamos will give you a taste of a once great past and you have the impression that time stands still. Stop At: Archaeological Site of Ancient Aptera, Megala Chorafia, Souda, Crete 73003 Greece

A relatively new castle in relatively good condition overlooking the bay of Suda in Crete. It was built by Hussein Avni pasha after the Cretan Revolution of 1866 to control the region of Apokorona and to support Itzadin fortress in controlling the strategically important bay of Suda.

Historical Folklore Museum of Gavalochori is located in Chania and hosted in the building of the former Community of Gavalochori.

The building of the Historical Folklore Museum of Gavalochori exemplifies the local architecture and has two floors. The ground floor also has a patio, an arched room with auxiliary spaces, while the first floor has an attic. The exhibition of objects is in accordance with modern museum concepts, with explanatory articles, photographs, drawings and models and is enriched each year by new findings.

The exhibits are categorized into the following themes: arched house, silk, pottery, lithotomy and stone sculpturing, carving and iconography, weapons and coins.
