As you progress through the exhibits your guide will tell you all about the cult of the Gods in Ancient Egyptian times and point out the various statues, including those of Isis, Sekhmet and Ramesses II. Ramesees II is the most important pharaoh of Ancient Egypt, remembered for the “Turin King List” where the names of all of the past kings of Egypt were recorded. This unique document is preserved in the museum and is the basis upon which the knowledge of the chronology of past kings before the reign of Ramesses II is founded.
When you think of Ancient Egypt then of course amongst the thousands of relics of this era the sphinxes stand out. In Egyptian mythology sphinxes were built near the pyramids as protective symbols ensuring that the pharaohs had a serene existence in the afterlife. Each sphinx has the body of a dog or a lion and a human head, believed to be a representation the pharaoh it is protecting.
Of particular interest is the tomb of Kha and Merit and the story of their enduring love. History tells that Merit, Kha’s wife, died before him and as a gesture of his profound love for her, Kha gave her the sarcophagus he had prepared for himself.
