Évora - Inside the Olive Oil, Wine, and Cork Triangle
  • Évora - Inside the Olive Oil, Wine, and Cork Triangle

In this 9-hour tour you will be driven south in comfort across the bridge through beautiful landscapes towards The

Alentejo, Portugal’s largest region and maybe the wildest. A region lined by a rugged coast to the west and filled with farmland, cork oaks, vineyards, olive groves, and other crops and livestock.. You will explore

Évora. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site,

Évora is known as a “city-museum” filled with culturally significant landmarks and it is marked with a notable history. It is also the

Alentejo’s regional capital and largest city. You will visit a wine producing estate where you will have lunch and a wine tasting. Then it is time - if within season and farmer available - to see how cork is extracted and produced before heading to another estate where one of Portugal most famous brand of olive oil is produced. Time for a tasting, of course, before heading back to Lisbon revitalized.

Explore Giraldo Square and the historic centre, and visit the Roman temple of Diana, the Evora Cathedral, and the Chapel of the Bones.

To be honest, Evora was not on our radar to our trip to Lisbon, however after reading the description of the tour, we were intrigued. Evora is a beautiful medieval village with elements of Gothic and Roman history. Our guide, Luis, was very easy to talk with and was like an encyclopedia of information about the region. The chapel of bones is a spectacular and unique sight to behold and is a MUST see if you are in Lisbon. Our visit to Ribafreixo Winery was informative and the regions wines are spectacular. Mariana was great at explaining the process and describing each varietal and pairing appropriate wines with our lunch. The lunch was probably the best authentic Portuguese meal we had during our trip - highly recommended are the Octopus and the Pork and Clams. We gave this tour 4 stars because there was a scheduling conflict with the olive oil tasting at Oliviera de Serra, which we didn’t get to do, because the operator wouldn’t open the doors for us. Also we didn’t get to see any of the cork producing facilities, but Luís was very knowledgeable about the process and explained it to us while perusing cork goods at Évora. To make up for it, Luis took us to the Cristo Rei before returning to Lisbon, which offers awesome panoramic views of the city and the 25 de Abril bridge over the Tagus river. All in all the tour and Luís was great, and we highly recommend it.
