Arica Hummingbird with 8 cms. long, is the smallest bird of Chile, and one of the world's smallest. It is found in Arica, and in the valleys and oases near, down occasionally on the coastal zone in Cobija, north of Antofagasta, where the record belongs southernmost. In any case, unlikely to live permanently in the arid areas of that part of the coast, so its presence in these areas should be extremely rare.

Their identification is facilitated due to its small size, and its black and straight bill. The female can be confused with the female hummingbird Cora (Thaumastura cora), even though it is more whitish underparts.
