|
Pato juarjua:
NAME (S) LOCAL (S):
Juarjual, duck crest
DISTRIBUTION IN CHILE:
Talca to Cape Horn, with more trips to the mountains north of Santiago.
HABITAT:
Lakes, ponds, reservoirs, bogs and calm waters of the mountainous area. From Aysén south, also in the coastal zone.
DESCRIPTION:
Length: 50 cms.
Dull gray-brown head, white neck. Lomo dark brown. Chest and abdomen pale reddish. Brownish gray wings. Speculum green glow coppery red band with black back. White band at the tip of the secondary. Cola brown to black with purple gloss. Bill blackish. Dark gray legs. Red eye.
This species of duck is found in lagoons and wetlands of the northern mountain range in distribution, where she lives and nests. However, from south Aysen lives both in the highland interior lagoons and in the coastal zone, even for his food in salt water pools formed by low water or eating rubbish dumped by man. A characteristic of this species are the feathers of the neck similar to a small bun.
Although its range is south of Talca, no records north to the mountainous area of Santiago, overlapping that of the subspecies alticola where you can see mixed groups. Both races can be differentiated from each other by the size, being the typical race somewhat smaller, and the red eye in the typical race alticola in orange.
