Yal, dial, rare black.
DISTRIBUTION IN CHILE:
Arica to Magellan
HABITAT:
Preferably on hillsides covered with thick bushes or shrubs. Also in valleys and plains.
DESCRIPTION:
Length: 18 to 19 cms.
Male: head, mantle, back and flanks dark gray slate. Nearly black throat and chest. Abdomen light gray to white. Slaty black wings with two small white stripes. Yellow bill. Legs dark yellow. Brown eyes.
Female: head, neck, back and mantle brown with dark stripes. Throat and breast whitish with brownish longitudinal stripes. Primary and secondary lined dark brown. Bill and feet dark brown.
The Yal is well spread throughout the country, from Arica to Tierra del Fuego. In the northern zone due to the scarcity of water, should stay in the few areas with existing vegetation such as oases and canyons of the pre-mountain range to about 4,000 meters altitude. Towards the south central and often preferred to live and nest the slopes and ravines thick with bushes and shrubs of the pre-Andes, above 1,000 meters. However, during the winter tends to go down to the valleys and plains and even reaches the coast.
It's a very social bird, often walking in flocks all year and nest several pairs at once in the same territory. The loose costrucción nest, lined with plants is soft and the clutch usually consists of 3 but sometimes 2 eggs, pale blue-green background and with plenty of pints. Dimensions of 25 mm. x 17 mm. app.
The immature male resembles the female, predominantly brown tone.
