DISTRIBUTION IN CHILE:
High Range of Tarapaca and Antofagasta. In the Arica area can be found at lower elevations.
HABITAT:
Lakes, ponds, bogs and calm areas of rivers.
DESCRIPTION:
Length: 40 - 46 cms.
Bulky body pitch black slate, little white on subcaudal. Gray-tipped yellow bill and frontal shield red puffed brown. Legs green.
There are copies with white beak and shield.
Bird of the high mountains of the north, it is found in lakes and ponds between 3500 to 5000 meters. However, you can go down to lower altitudes along water courses as in a river on river Lauca Arica and Lluta. Goodall, Johnson, and Philippi (1951 - pag.183) mention his work in November 1945 that they were surprised to find Chacance (Antofagasta), at the confluence of the rivers Loa and San Salvador, only 1,000 meters on the sea, six nesting pairs in full.
Feature for identification of this species is the white beak tip grayish yellow sides and front shield, outstanding, rounded upward, brownish red. However, morphological changes may occur twice during the winter and are that of the peak and normal colors change to white frontal shield (Jaramillo 2003).
